Hi All!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! It was so beautiful!
A huge thank you to Anne LeSenne from the University of Arizona Extension office for working with us last week with the bees. So much information! I look forward to hearing what all the teens learn this week! Also, if you are interested in running a couple beehives in my orchard, let me know! Ms. Anne has graciously agreed to help us get started transitioning our current hive from Africanized honeybees to European honeybees in the next month or so. I do not want to run the hives, but I would be happy to loan out my orchard to the kids to do a project (or you adults if you really want to ;-) ) where we could do a "honey share". Let me know your thoughts!
(Side note: don't let the thought of Africanized honeybees in our orchard scare you. They are far away from the kids and have never bothered any of us--even when we go out to the orchard. It is only because Anne looked in the hive that she knew they were Africanized. Normally, they stick to themselves and you wouldn't know they were there ;-) ).
And now on to this week's schedule!
(Please Note: If your child will be doing a lot of running around and is easily over-heated, please make sure to bring lots of water. The tap water in the shop kitchen is drinkable, but we will not be providing bottled water or cups)
From 10-Noon(ish) we will break into group activities:
Group A-- Ages 5-8
You will be doing P.E. this week with me!...Mrs. Davis. I am so excited to play games with you all in the pasture (FAR away from the orchard/bees ;-) ).
Parents, if your little ones tend to wander, please stay close by. You are responsible for taking your child to the restroom or providing them with water if they get thirsty. Try to remind them that this is a group activity, and they should try to stick with their group as much as possible. That will really help keep things flowing smoothly for everyone. <3
Materials Needed:
Sunscreen and Water Bottles.
Clothes/shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.
Group B--Ages 9-12
Sunscreen and Water Bottles...if you so desire.
Clothes/shoes that you don't mind getting dirty and/or wet.
Garden gloves if you think you need them.
Group C--Ages 13-18

If you do not live in Pinal County, but you want to attend either the Dairy Goat or Chicken classes to at least learn about the animals, you are welcome to do that as well, but priority will go to those who can participate in the fair (so must live in Pinal County).
Dairy Goat: Meets right after the activities are over--around noonish. This week we will be learning how to trim hooves and practicing walking our goats.
Chicken: Meets at 1 pm - This week's topic: Basic chicken anatomy...and practice showing chickens (every week)
