September 20th

Hi All!

I hope you had a wonderful summer!  It is starting to cool down a bit, so it's time to think about getting back together 💗.

It has been a long three months here on the farm.  We sadly lost two of our favorite animals:

George, one of the best dog ambassadors that has ever lived. You would know him as the dog that lived in the pasture and protected our goats.  He made it to 12, which is very old for a Livestock Guardian, but unfortunately over the summer, George succumbed to lung cancer. George was well-loved by all who visited our farm, and his loss has been heavy.

And PrincessButtercup, our 9-year-old LaMancha doe, we lost due to kidney failure. Princess was one of our star milkers and did an amazing job at fair every year, including as one of our leased show goats this past March. She left us with three beautiful, friendly doelings and we are very thankful for the years she gave us.

(Feb. 2024)

But, on the happier side of things, we also gained some new ducks. These are Muscovy ducks and unlike most domesticated ducks, these can fly, so we can't keep them penned in the pasture.  I absolutely LOVE them, so I ask that you treat them with respect and kindness. DO NOT TRY TO PICK THEM UP. Not only would they not prefer to be held, but they have sharp nails (because they can climb trees) and would scratch you pretty badly without even trying.

(muscovy ducklings)
(They grew up quick!)
(...and now sit on our roof, like pigeons)

And although these are not new, we will also be leaving our Sebastopol geese out this year... mostly because they adopted the baby ducks and get really vocal when they are forced to be separated from them.

The geese are friendly, but the same rules apply with our geese as with our ducks. If they choose to hang out in the backyard (which they probably won't), please look, but don't touch...unless they choose to climb into your lap (which is a possibility if you sit still long enough.)

(This is an old picture. We currently only have 5 geese in the backyard, but this picture makes me laugh.)

Oh...and I guess this isn't technically farm related, BUT, for those who may not have heard the news yet:

I'm a GRANDMA!!!!
(I just won't get to hold my grandbaby until around March 😉 )

And now you have been updated on the farm. Time for the activities.

Schedule for Friday, September 20, 2024

From 10-Noon(ish) we will break into group activities:

Group A-- Ages 5-8

You will be the first group doing the Project this year. Because it is a fan favorite, we will be "launching" our co-op off with rockets again this year (see what I did there? LAUNCHING 😁).  We will learn about chemical reactions, as well as the basic physics behind the bottle rocket launch. Come prepared for an exciting adventure in physics!

Materials Needed:

A plastic bottle of some sort. 2-liter bottles work best, but the amount of pressure we will be using this week does not require a soda bottle necessarily (though it really is the best).

A water bottle to drink out of (if you think you may get thirsty)

Sunscreen...if you so desire.

Clothes/shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Parents, if your little ones tend to wander, please stay close by. You are responsible for taking your child to the restroom or providing them with water if they get thirsty. Try to remind them that this is a group activity, and they should try to stick with their group as much as possible. That will really help keep things flowing smoothly for everyone. 💗

Group B--Ages 9-12

You will be doing the P.E. this week. Mr. D. has a project that he really wants to get ready for our P.E. this year, however, he is helping Mr. Davis (my husband) build a house for our daughter and son-in-law (and my GRANDBABY!!!!), so he may not have time to prepare his P.E. class. So, he might have his ongoing project ready, or he might just set up kickball, or some other fun group game for you all. Come prepared to have fun!

Materials Needed:

Athletic shoes of some sort

A water bottle--if you think you'll want something to drink (which you will!)

Sunscreen, if you so desire.

A great attitude!

Group C--Ages 13-18

You will be doing Gardening this week. Ms. Paula has so many fun plans for this year, but we need to wait and see what is ready by the 20th. Come prepared to get dirty and learn a ton!

Materials Needed:

Sunscreen and Water Bottles...if you so desire.

And clothes/shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Garden gloves if you think you want them.

Those teenagers that do not feel like participating in Gardening are welcome to volunteer with Group A. Please NOTE: you WILL be put to work if you volunteer in that capacity!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Picnic Lunch

Everyone is welcome to stay and have a picnic lunch in the backyard area. You are responsible for bringing your own lunch. Please do not feed any animals with that lunch and please make sure all garbage is disposed of in the dumpster or garbage can.

See you in a couple of weeks!!!
